Meet Jill Hardman

Jill was raised on a 1,200 acre farm outside of Columbus, Ohio. The youngest of five daughters, she never once questioned that her future would be in the Arts. Though she could bale hay and rope cattle as well as anyone, her favorite pastime was painting in the garden. Her most important influence was her grandmother, a talented artist in her own right, who encouraged Jill’s artistic development and even framed Jill’s paintings for display in their home.

It was her grandmother’s unwavering support that heartened Jill to pursue a degree in the arts, despite her father’s misgivings. Her parents, however, had instilled in Jill a strong foundation of work ethic, spirituality, and education and she knew that there was nothing she couldn’t do once she put her mind to it. After graduating from DePauw University, Indiana, Jill continued her graduate studies at the Sorbonne University of Paris, studying famous artists like Marc Chagal.

Once she had had her fill of traveling and living abroad, Jill came to California to open her gallery. She immediately felt at home in the small town island of Coronado. In 1985, she bought the current building, complete with backyard garden and bear claw bathtub, and built a full service framing workshop on the upper floor. As the only woman founder of the Professional Picture Framers’ Association of America, she has received many first place design awards. Examples of her breathtaking shadow boxes are on permanent display in the gallery.

Jill remains active in the community, giving regularly to a number of Coronado institutions. The charity she holds most dear is the Coronado Schools Foundation, through which she has willed her part of her estate to the fine arts department. In this way she can be sure to benefit the lives of young artists for years to come.
