“Why do I find myself following in my father’s footsteps? I find myself enmeshed in the same passions that engulfed my Dad when he first started sculpting, nearly thirty years ago. While undertaking the completion of his unfinished work and pursuing work of my own, I’ve discovered that the intrinsic challenges that motivated him to become one of the foremost figurative realists in the world, motivate me as well…bringing together all the elements of design and subject, vision and execution, so that a finished sculpture reflects a ‘whole,’ so that, all these separate parts merge to ignite fresh emotion and inspiration…”
Sergei Joslin’s formative years were spent in relative isolation, living a free but Spartan life with his bohemian mother and father onboard a 37’ Block Islander as they sailed and island hopped throughout the South Pacific. During his adolescent years, Sergei watched his father’s endless perseverance as he grappled with sculpting his personal visions in everlasting bronze, watched while his dad became one of the most revered figurative realists in this world. When the ‘business’ of his dad’s mastery of the medium became too great a burden for his dad, Sergei made a deliberate decision to join the family business, and Joslin Studio became Joslin Studios.
“Sculpting with my Dad was enjoyable but only a small fraction of my many responsibilities. However, I must have absorbed a great many lessons. Along the way, I recognized the intrinsic challenges cast bronze presents and it remains a medium that has not yet been fully explored. I don’t think artists have fully realized this medium’s potential and I am more than intrigued by its promise. I guess you could say that I am caught up in the passion of possibilities.”
